What is your corset size?
A little something about corset sizing.
A question I get asked a lot is: what is the right corset size for me?
There is not a simple answer to this question without knowing your exact measurement. However in order to make it a little easier…
I have a very long ribcage and tall hips which means I can only reduce in an area barely an inch wide. I can’t even wear belts unless they are elastic and even then they wind up riding high. My imperial officers belt sits at my waist at the bottom and digs in to my ribs at the top. It’s only just 2” wide.
So I have an hourglass shape where I can indeed reduce to a disproportionately small waist but it doesn’t taper above or below, which makes me look bigger rather than smaller.
Also whatever you reduce at the waist will be pushed up and down. In hourglass this is mostly down while in straight fronted it’s up. I have an article about this style but I think it is in my Girl’s Own Annual from 1911. Anyway it discusses the need to have laces loose while fastening the busk and then pulling the laces and stopping to bring the flesh of the belly up before pulling in to reduce the upper hips. Not sure if that was an article I read or from my GoA to be honest.
Either way you need to account for this as well. And it’s why I love gored bust corsets! My steampunk corset was great in this regard but I had issues with the hip sections (c1904 shape) and the seam digging in and collapsing at my waist that I adapted the pattern to a gored bust with panels to the hips.
Oh and also take in to account the bulk of the corset itself. If you were to wear the corset just barely fitted it would add to your measurements. Especially so with thick boning and fabric. I need to get some steels and see if I can finish my Mina corset to go under my Mina gown for the shazam! ultra defined shape even with a v front and back to the gown. a gored bust corset will allow for this especially made from fairly self supporting fabric. And bust improvers 😉
Portraits of a Khaleesi
I recently had the chance to shoot with I Must be Dead Photography (mature content warning) when he made a brief stop up in San Francisco for a gig. We’d been trying to find a time to collaborate, so decided to make the most out of the opportunity even if it meant shooting on the fly at his hotel. As we’re both fans of A Song of Ice and Fire, Daenerys was the natural fit.
We chose to focus mostly on portraits due to the limited time and space, but I was actually quite happy with the prospect. I’m a huge fan of his raw approach to photography – sharp, high contrast photos with little retouching done on the model. Imperfections lend authenticity and intrigue to his work.
Drawing from Daenerys’ experiences in the House of The Undying, I tried to express an array of emotions from fear to sadness and determination. These are incredibly unique images in my cosplay portfolio, and I’m madly in love with the end result.
Build notes for this costume are coming, but in case anyone is curious my eyes are indeed purple! I picked up contacts from eyesbright.com. 🙂

It’s been a long time since I’ve felt comfortable enough to actually show emotion in photos. I can still act for stage but I’ve been really ripped apart for being “old” and “ugly” for you know, actually looking like I’m in the middle of battle in cosplay photos!
These are glorious and I’m so glad you and the photographer caught these haunting images 🙂
Truth.
Cheno got the best lines in this show. Actually these two had wonderful chemistry full stop. And they played well on her singing 🙂 Especially being constantly interrupted when singing full voice. One of the few non-irritating unrequited love stories of modern times 😉

Christian Dior Haute Couture – Spring/Summer 2011 – Details
I’m in love with this collection. It’s the one with the red and black dress right? The collection with circles on circles and sheer over solid? Many many noms and so incredible to know how much was done by hand and straight stitch machines. And big shears….
Yup!

So if any costuming nutters wants to join me in working on this collection, maybe with a theme, I snaggles “look 5” and maybe in green and black for a Poison Ivy couture 😉
That said I have 9m of crepey almost aqua chiffon like the above. But I would estimate about 3 times that as that skirt is well over a cull circle.
22 years without Freddie Mercury
5th September 1946 – 24th November 1991Freddie, you changed the face of music and brought happiness into our lives with your incredible talent. We miss you and remember you every day, thank you for everything.
Vale.
I don’t have chronic pain but this artwork is so nice to look at *^*
Just because we’re not writhing on the floor doesn’t mean we’re not hurting. We’ve just gotten really good at hiding it and functioning with it, otherwise we’d literally starve in our beds.
🙁
I don’t think I’ve had a day even that good in at least seven years. A day like that with chronic pain is a real achievement.
Also, pain receptors can get a little confused.
I wound up in hospital and was asked to do the pain score. I literally couldn’t answer because I was beyond pain and mainly aware of the other symptons pain creates- nausea and inability to think and general disembodied feeling. So while I knew my body was in serious trouble I wasn’t using pain to rate it.
But it’s a good day today because I am sitting up and able to type 🙂 So the above would be a totally awesome day to celebrate because my pain levels match levels of disability. Usually.
Pain is “just” one symptom. It’s a result of ongoing processes that are sometimes understood sometimes not and sometimes partially understood even by the medical community.
In my case pain can be a sign of physical stress (on joints already damaged) or of disease activity (self targeting antibodies). The former is difficult and debilitating the latter is terrifying because of the systemic effects and the treatment is extremely aggressive (most overlap with treatment for cancer) when activity is regular.
Anyway, yeah sometimes it’s easy to see the pain, sometimes it’s not, sometimes the pain is an understood symptom of a disease you can see, sometimes it’s part of a misunderstood disease you can’t see. And everyone is different, and should not be used to put down others who either seem to be coping “too well” or “not well enough.”
Updates and upgrades and feelz
All my Asari and Turian molds are currently bleaching. The bleach will break down into salt over night (already smelling like it was changing at about 5pm) so tomorrow I’ll be able to lay them all out and let them dry off- not overly dry so I need to…
Repairing/replacing
I need to fix up some of my molds asap. I want to get rid of the clunky plaster mothers for my silicon molds and also repair some of my fibreglass molds which are more than a little bit icky. They have rough surfaces etc. So I may well start to attempt…
It's quite freeing-
Passing on of projects finally. My destash pile is getting smaller, or rather it’s all being passed through the washing machine on to postage boxes as various friends grab them up
Currently reassembling my quickie Eowyn funeral gown as well. A bit of a…
