Inspiration: the plain cotton striped dress from the BBC production of Pride and Prejudice. Lizzy wears this dress (with a different spencer) when she meets Mr Darcy again at Pemberly
January 2009
After many years I finally sewed up this pretty cotton dress I so loved loved. It was heavily inspired by the 1995 BBC production of Pride and Prejudice. I also made a dark blue velvet spencer to match.
The dress was self patterned using the day dress in Koehler’s History of Costume as a start for the bodice. There is a drawstring at the neck and the back is sewn closed each time I wear it. All seams are french seams and stripes are matched wherever possible. The sleeves were a complex shape mostly achieved through draping on a form. This is due to the tiny back panels of the bodice and high armscye to allow for a full range of arm movement.
The underdress is similarly patterned and has a self lined bodice.
